Everyone knows that proper dental care is the key to a healthy smile. But did you know it can affect other aspects of life as well? Recent studies show that children with poor oral health are significantly associated with reduced school performance. Also, a report from the Office of Surgeon General states that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related conditions. By encouraging your little ones to take good care of their teeth, you can set them up for academic success. Read on as your children’s dentist in South Burlington shares a few back-to-school oral hygiene tips.

Establish a Routine

Establishing an everyday oral hygiene routine is extremely important, especially for younger kids. Get your little one into the habit of brushing every morning after getting dressed and each night right before going to bed. Stick to this routine throughout the year, and your child will eventually learn that these practices are simply a part of their day. Before you know it, they’ll be doing it themselves without your assistance!

Make Brushing a Fun Activity

Some children may not want to brush because they’re unmotivated or find it boring. To encourage them, take your little one to the store and have them choose their own special toothbrush, toothpaste, and other oral care supplies. Some toothbrushes light up, play music, or have fun characters on them, giving your child newfound enthusiasm for brushing! If that doesn’t work, you can also try giving them a sticker or other small reward each time they brush for positive reinforcement.

Pack Tooth-Friendly Lunches

Be mindful of the snacks and foods your little one eats during lunch. Unfortunately, most lunchbox favorites are full of sugar – and that can wreak havoc on teeth. Bacteria feed on these sugars and create an acid that sits on your child’s teeth for the rest of the day. The harmful acid can wear down the enamel, increasing the risk of decay, cavities, and even gum disease. Keep your little one’s mouth safe by packing them a lunch that’s high in proteins, fibers, and dairy. It’s a good idea to include foods like deli meat, cheese, fresh fruits, whole-grain bread, pretzels, and nuts.

Schedule a Dental Checkup

Start the school year with a bi-annual visit to the dentist! It’s the perfect time for a checkup as it allows their dentist to prevent, detect, or treat any dental issues that can become severe complications down the line. By managing any oral health concerns ahead of time, you can have peace of mind knowing their mouth won’t interfere with their studies during the year.

Now you have one more reason to encourage your child to maintain good oral health. With a healthy smile, they’re guaranteed to spend their days in school – not in a dental office!
